Chief Don
Towne
Chief Towne began his
fire service career in 1986 as a volunteer firefighter with the Charlton County GA Volunteer Fire Department.
Joining the U.S. Coast Guard in 1988, he served onboard the USCGC Salvia in Mobile, Al and then later transferred to the USCG TRACEN Fire Department in
Cape May, N.J. While stationed in Cape May, he
volunteered with the Town Bank Volunteer Fire Department.
After serving in the USCG, he returned home to Folkston, Georgia and began working with the Marine Corps Logistics Base Fire Department in
Albany as a part-time firefighter, later accepting a position with the St.
Mary’s Fire Department as a Crew Chief. After consolidating with Camden County Fire Rescue, Chief Towne was
appointed the Training Captain and later promoted to Assistant Fire Chief.
In 2002 he was employed by Kingsland Fire Rescue to assist with training, grant writing and as a hazardous
materials coordinator. Chief Towne left Kingsland in 2007 to become the first outside Fire Chief in the City of
Cairo’s 102 year history.
