Department History

Barrow County Emergency Services began serving the citizens of Barrow County in January of 2009 with the combination of fire and ems, E-911 and emergency management. Prior to that date those departments operated as separate divisions. The merger of these departments provides for a more efficient emergency service delivery.

For many years, fire protection in Barrow County was provided by a dedicated group of volunteers operating from individual departments across the county. But with the growth of the county and the fact that many of the volunteers worked outside of the county, the need was evident that a fulltime fire department was needed. These volunteers laid the foundation for our department and their service to the community will forever be appreciated. 

The department now operates six emergency service delivery locations strategically located throughout the county and employs over 100 full-time and part-time personnel providing fire and emergency medical services to the citizens and visitors to Barrow County.
