We currently provide Fire and Emergency Medical Services, E-911 services and Emergency Management to
approximately 63,000 citizens of Barrow County and other visitors through six stations, utilizing six engine
companies, one truck company and six advanced life support ambulances. We are a relatively new department,
Emergency Services was formed in 2009 by the merging of Fire and EMS, E-911 and Emergency Management.
Previously, all three departments were separated and managed by different department directors. We staff
six stations with twenty-five personnel per shift on a twenty-four/forty-eight rotation, utilizing three
shifts. The department utilizes five staff positions as well. All front-line fire personnel report
to a company officer in the station and that company officer reports to a battalion chief. Our 911 Center operates
24 hours a day, seven days a week and is staffed by three to four operators at all times. Each shift is managed by
a communications supervisor and those supervisors report to the 911 manager Kathy Wallace.
All front-line fire personnel are required to obtain NPQ FF-1 and 2 and they must be certified as an
EMT-Intermediate or EMT-Paramedic.
Communications Operators are required to complete The P.O.S.T.
Basic Communications Operators Course and emergency medical dispatch training.
We require NPQ FF-1 and EMT-Intermediate or EMT-Paramedic to apply with the
fire department.
