Public Information Officer Scott
Dakin
The Public Information Officer (PIO) has several different responsibilities with
Barrow County Emergency Services. The main responsibility of the PIO is media relations. The Public Information
Officer works with local television, radio and newspapers to inform the citizens of news worthy events that the
Department has responded to. The PIO also works with the media to keep the citizens informed about improvements to
services provided by the Department. In the event of a disaster hitting
Barrow County the PIO will work with the media to get priority messages to the citizens to help them in the
recovery efforts.
The Public Information Officer is also responsible for organizing public relation events for
the Department. The PIO has worked with other Public Safety Departments in participating in such events as
the Public Safety Day, Ghost Out programs at the High Schools, and the Empty Stocking Toy Drive.
In other public relation areas the PIO also works with the Barrow County School System in
several different areas. This includes coordinating with the schools so that many firefighters are active as
mentors. The PIO also coordinates along with others in the Partners In Education agreements between Barrow
County Emergency Services and every elementary school in the school system. This includes scheduling
firefighters to go into the schools for events such as career days, reading to the kids and award
ceremonies.
Lieutenant Scott Dakin is the current Public Information Officer
for Barrow County Emergency Services. Lt. Dakin has worked over the last several years to develop
relationships with the local media. These relationships has helped him in his efforts to keep the citizens of
Barrow County informed on the changes and growth the Department has made and will continue to make. Through
these efforts the department has become known as a very open organization that is easily accessible to its
citizens.
